My fascination with Microsoft Kinect continues. There was an interesting story in this morning’s Gizmodo about a project that layers HD video over Kinect’s depth maps. The project, called RGBDToolkit, is available now. The set-up isn’t simple (it requires 2 Kinects and a DSLR), but the results are uber cool. Check it out. (via This Is [...]
Before I go into the substance of my first blog post here at SimSingularity, I’d like to briefly introduce myself. I am a blood banker by trade, and was introduced to healthcare simulation in 2011 as part of my interest in training clinical teams managing obstetric hemorrhage. A big tip o’ the hat to Jeff [...]
There was an interesting blog entry in the New York Times this morning concerning the Microsoft Kinect. Craig Mundie, Microsoft’s Chief Research and Strategy Officer, touted the Kinect as the beginning of a revolution in human – computer interaction. Mundie believes the Kinect will ultimately replace today’s computer Graphical User Interfaces (or GUI). This proclamation [...]
The Observer put together this video compilation of the coolest Kinect hacks so far. They range from the goofy to the downright cool. The original article has links to many of the individual projects. Well worth the 2 minutes of viewing time. (Via Kinect hackers take control of the action | Technology | The Observer.)
I noticed several tweets on the use of Microsoft Kinect to control actions in off-the-shelf video games (e.g. World of Warcraft) and decided to check it out. Watch this impressive video from USC Institute of Creative Technologies. Controlling video games in this way opens up a whole new world of possibilities–I’m especially enthusiastic about combining [...]
I found a link to this video on Downloadsquad. The folks at MIT have “hacked” (not really because Microsoft left the Kinect open by design) a Kinect to be reminiscent of the interface seen in Minority Reports. The demo video also shows the incredible resolution of the Kinect–able to identify individual fingers on both hands. [...]
Another example of the creative activities going on with the Microsoft Kinect–MIDI control! YouTube – Kinect – MIDI controller:
A student in MIT’s Personal Robotic Group has used a Kinect to build a “KinectBot.” The robot “sees” the environment as well as responds to hand gestures. During its journey it generates a 3-dimenstional map of its surroundings. Take a minute to view the video–quite impressive. via ?Hacked iRobot Uses XBox Kinect to See [...]
Hackers were able to alter the programming of the Microsoft Kinect only a matter of days after it’s November 4 debut. Florian Echtler was able to accomplish the hack by hooking an open source Kinect driver to his personal, custom, multitouch software library. The first of many interesting tweeks we will see over the next [...]
