I had an interesting day at the 12th Annual International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare in San Diego. The day started with the Simulation Education Network Meeting. Had quick chats with Lisa Sinz, Amanda Cooper, Mannie Pardo, Jeff Cooper, and Dave Gaba.  SEN is up to 30 endorsed sites–and has already provided simulations for close to 600 MOCA candidates.

Had a nice lunch with Lisa Sinz and Hal Doerr–putting finishing touches on our debate for Tuesday.

Later in the morning, the meeting officially kicked off with a mass casualty demonstration complete with bomb sniffing robot and the San Diego Fire Department. A man was standing next to me comforting his young son assuring him what he saw was only “make-believe.” The kid wasn’t convinced. I hope he wasn’t too traumatized. I started tweeting at this event @jeffreytaekman –and was joined by a half dozen others. Seems more are interested in Twitter this year then last. Channel 8 in San Diego featured a story on the event.

Paul Haidet (Penn State) gave the Plenary Address–likening healthcare learning to jazz improv. The lecture started with the The Play in the 1982 Cal-Stanford Big Game–still gives me chills to watch that touchdown after all these years. Dr. Haidet’s lecture was followed by the official opening of the Exhibit Hall.

Bumped into the crew from Applied Research Associates / Virtual Heroes. Make sure to check out the prototype of a unique virtual environment simulation we’ve been working on (supported by US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command) focused on sedation training and rapid sequence intubation for non-anesthesia providers. I’ll also be presenting a poster on how we plan to use this software in a multi-modal simulation approach to sedation training.

More fun and learning tomorrow. Wish I could be there with Laura Lee Hall and  the rest of the SIM-FIT MI Team for their presentation. Unfortunately, Melanie Wright and I were double booked and will be giving our own session on the assessment of team skills at the same time.

See you tomorrow! Follow tweets @Jeffreytaekman  #imsh2012
